The Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics (IAP), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is delighted to congratulate Prof. Sai Siva Gorthi and his research team on a Landmark Patent Achievement of securing patent protection in 17 countries including the US and India for their innovative technology aimed at improving the screening and diagnosis of sickle cell disorders.
Patent Title: Methods for Identifying Haemoglobin S or C in a Biological Sample and Kits Thereof’ which relates to the detection of sickle cell disease and related haemoglobinopathies.
Inventors: Rajesh Srinivasan, Eugene Christo V. R., Prateek Katare, Aravind Venukumar, Nisanth K. M. Nambison, and Prof. Sai Siva Gorthi.
Sickle cell disease continues to pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in underserved regions where access to advanced diagnostic infrastructure is limited. The patented technology introduces a low-cost, rapid, and point-of-care diagnostic platform capable of detecting abnormal sickling hemoglobins—Haemoglobin S (HbS) and Haemoglobin C (HbC)—from a single drop of blood.
This achievement exemplifies how interdisciplinary research at Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics IAP is translating cutting-edge photonics and instrumentation research into impactful healthcare technologies with global relevance.
