Abstract:
Increasing digital transformation and data-driven practices have created a demand for new skills at the human-technology frontier in health, defense, energy, and other manufacturing industries. Future workers must adopt complex digital tools, models, processes, and data into their work and contextualize the work in the digital thread. They must appreciate the nuanced connections across functional of their work, design, engineering and manufacturing constraints, and the demands imposed by operations and maintenance activities. We discuss a no-code platform that provides in-situ, just-in-time, informatics through AR devices that guides workers to complete task sequences, navigate workspaces, and communicate in real-time when support is needed while assuring safety of both workers and the workspace. The system can capture experiences of the workers and update the content to promote inter-generational knowledge-transfer. We also discuss the importance of participatory action research and multidisciplinary authoring of AR content in operationalizing such a system. Our key interest is the design of systems and practices that promote the adoption of AR systems in a variety of training and education scenarios that will empower future workers to fully engage in digital transformation and thrive in evolving work contexts.
