About IISc

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a premier public research university dedicated to higher education and research in science, engineering, design, and management. Located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, the Institute was established in 1909 with the active support of Jamsetji Tata; as a result, it is still locally known as the “Tata Institute.” Today, it is ranked among the most prestigious academic institutions in India and holds the distinction of having the highest citations per faculty among all universities worldwide.
The inception of the Institute was deeply influenced by Swami Vivekananda. Impressed by Vivekananda’s views on science and leadership, Jamsetji Tata sought his guidance in advancing the country’s scientific capabilities. Vivekananda endorsed the project with enthusiasm, leading Tata to constitute a Provisional Committee to draft a plan for an institute of research and higher education. This proposal was presented to Lord Curzon on December 31, 1898. Subsequently, Nobel Laureate Sir William Ramsay was consulted to identify a suitable location; he recommended Bangalore as the ideal site.
In 1909, Morris Travers, a co-worker of Sir William Ramsay and co-discoverer of the noble gases, became the Institute’s first Director. Having played a pivotal role in its founding, Travers saw the directorship as a natural continuation of his efforts. Later, the Institute reached a significant milestone when Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman became its first Indian Director.
In 2018, IISc was among the first six institutions to be granted “Institute of Eminence” status by the Government of India. In 2019, the Institute launched its official brand statement: “Discover and Innovate; Transform and Transcend; Serve and Lead.” Continuing its trajectory of growth, IISc received a private donation of ₹425 crore in 2022—the largest in its history—to establish a state-of-the-art postgraduate medical institute.
